Melvin Russell Boyle During World War I he was part of reconnaissance troops who worked ahead of the front lines. Melvin was wounded in the right shoulder and laid there several days because of heavy firing. He crawled back to the front line but the Red Cross trucks were full. After one more day Melvin was determined to get on a truck which he did. Unfortunately, when he got to the hospital it was bombed. After he relocated to another hospital, an American and an Italian doctor said the arm would have to be amputated. However, a French doctor said the arm could be saved if Melvin could stand pain. The arm was painfully saved by pouring alcohol in the open wound a putting in a plate. The doctors agreed that maggots in the open wound had saved Melvin's life.
